Year Two - Ball Clay Modelling

30 million years in the making is an exhibition and participatory art project in development by Mandy Biscoe and Johanna Korndorfer.

The aim of the project is to tell the story and reveal the heritage of Ball Clay, an important and unique material which we largely take for granted but is found in so many products in our homes.

One of the world’s most important deposits are found locally in two areas of Devon known as the Bovey and Petrockstowe Basins where Ball Clay continues to be extracted.  As this is in our local area we were invited to take part in the project ourselves.

Mandy and Johanna led workshops in both Year 2 classes during which the children learned about where Ball Clay comes from and the everyday uses of clay, before having a go at modelling using some different types of Ball Clay.  We learned a lot and really enjoyed it, thank you very much Mandy and Johanna!
