Today during Art Club we
found out about Vincent
van Gogh.
Between 1881 and 1890,
Van Gogh painted nearly 900 pictures. He only sold one painting while he was
alive. For most of his life he was very poor, often spending his money on art
supplies instead of food. Van Gogh sadly died at the age of only 37.
Since his death though
he has become one of the most famous painters in the world. His paintings have
captured the hearts and minds of million of art lovers worldwide.
A number of
Van Gogh's paintings were still life studies. A still-life is a picture of
objects that don't move, often vases, bowls of fruit, bottles etc. The artist
sets up a still-life usually in the studio to do a 'study' of the objects. It
may be a drawing or a painting. The artist looks at the objects and studies
their shape, where the light falls and the shadows the objects make in relation
to the other objects.
We decided
to start practicing the skills needed to make our own still life study by
having a go at drawing an apple using graduated shades of colour to make it
look three dimensional. Click here to see the clip we watched to help us, although
instead of using paint we tried pastels which we had to blend carefully.
We think they look great!
