Summer of Art!

With the summer holidays nearly upon us, it is time to look for fun children's activities to fill the days!

There are lots of brilliant (and often completely free) creative things going on locally that you can all get involved in. Here is a small selection.

The first Saturday of every month is 'Monster Saturday' at Torquay Museum.

Each provides opportunities for children and families to learn through fun, hands-on activities for all ages. Activities to date have ranged from printmaking, plaster reliefs, animation and painting, to microscope work, building ‘vinegar volcanos’ and other hands-on experiments, studying fossils - and building molecules out of sweets!

Monster Saturdays are free with a museum ticket. All entry tickets are valid for one year, so families buy one entry ticket and can then join in all other Monster Saturdays for free.

The Museum also runs holiday workshops at a low cost, the theme for the summer holidays is 'Plundering Pirates' which ties in with their new exhibition.

Mrs Hadley often takes her own children to the 'Monster Saturdays' and highly recommends them!

We are very fortunate to have access to a truly superb museum just up the road in Exeter.

The Royal Albert Memorial Museum has recently undergone extensive modernisation and is thoroughly worth a visit if you haven't been yet.  There are stunning new displays and galleries, fabulous exhibitions and modern amenities. Exotic animals, birds and insects delight children and the world cultures galleries display stunning items from all over the world.  Even better than that, it is completely free to get in! Perfect for those drizzly summer days.

There are extra family activities arranged for the summer holidays, some of which incur a small cost. Click on the link above for extra information regarding these special events.

Tate St Ives Super Sunday

The Tate St Ives and Barbara Hepworth Sculpture Garden are beautiful art galleries in a stunning location!

Although slightly further afield, if any of you are staying in Cornwall both are worth a visit, particularly on days when they have something special arranged for children.

There is a family activity trail at the Barbara Hepworth Museum.  Designed for adults and younger children to have fun together exploring this magical environment that was the artist’s home and studio, including the garden she created for her sculpture.

Available from the Admissions Desk, Barbara Hepworth Museum.
Price (£2.50) includes sketchbook and simple art materials.

The Art Base Summer Holiday workshops at the Tate also look great. Let your children explore, create and play at these drop-in sessions.  The workshops are free with admission and there is no need to book, although spaces are limited so get there early to avoid disappointment.

Click on the link above for more details of family events at the Tate St Ives over the summer.
