Year 5-Robert and Sonia Delaunay Inspired Christmas Card Designs.

Okay, I know it's a little bit early to start thinking about Christmas cards but we were recently invited to take part in a Christmas card competition by the wonderful Helen Foundation and of course we couldn't resist!

The brief was quite specific and suggested that abstract designs might be a good idea so we looked to some well known some abstract artists for some inspiration!  Abstact artworks do not attempt to represent a recognizable reality but instead use shapes, colours, forms and textures to achieve their effect.  We loved Robert and Sonia Delaunay's colourful, vibrant artwork and based our designs on their paintings.

Around 1912, Robert and Sonia Delaunay developed Orphism, an abstract, cubist influenced style of painting.  In the Delaunays’ work patches of subtle and beautiful colour are brought together to create balanced compositions.

As the theme was 'Christmas', we thought carefully about the shapes and colours we associate with that time.  We thought we could use triangles to represent christmas trees, circles to represent baubles and squares to be presents.

We used Brusho ink as we we wanted rich, vivid colours.
